Zeitgeist 2008
Zeitgeist is German for "spirit of the time."
Search engines are the information gatekeepers of postmodern society. Bit by bit they deconstruct, categorize and index popular culture. They make meaning of the world by systematically mapping the multitude of cultural, socio-political and intellectual landscapes. This cultural cartographic information system enables mankind to navigate, validate and manipulate the digital terrain of the twenty-first century.
Zeitgeist 8 mirrors the most frequently searched keywords and phrases of 2008, from the Google, Yahoo and MSN search engines. Top search terms are meticulously organized into a figure-eight form and collectively represent a snapshot of America's rapidly shifting cultural, political and economic climate. And so this illustration embodies the American spirit of 2008.
