Dior
I conceived this idea in 2007 and spent an entire year figuring out the best execution. I started with an image of a pop icon - a male Christian Dior model. I used Photoshop's pen tool to "trace" specific elements of the images. Since I only wanted to use two primary colors plus a background color in the painting, I traced highlights (would become silver) and shadows (would become black) and saved them in separate layers. This took about 10 hours for each image.
First I painted the background color. The next day used my laptop and a video projector to transfer the "highlights" layer onto the canvas hanging in my parent's garage. Then I painted a silver silhouette of the entire body over the background color. The following day I projected the "shadows" layer onto the canvas and subsequently painted black shadows. After I finished painting there was a silver/black silhouette over the background color. I had to paint three coats for each color and each painting took 20+ hours total.
The purpose of these paintings was to incorporate contemporary technology with a traditional medium. Andy Warhol and his screen-printing technique loosely inspired me, as each Photoshop layer represents a different screen. Over a year of thought went into these paintings and I am very happy with the end result.
